I’m sure we can all agree that the old, “system,” is failing us as a society, quite miserably. The old advice to go to school, get a good job with a growing company and a pension plan, save for retirement with a diversified portfolio of stocks and mutual funds is still being taught to young adults.
A huge number of honest, hard working people have been SCAMMED into believing that this is the key to a happy and successful life in middle America. I’m sure many of the same people who lost 40% of their retirement in the stock market in 2007 and 2008 are still telling their children and family members that this is the “secure” way to go because they don’t know any other way.
The fact is that with all the greed and BS that goes on in corporate America the “old way” is becoming less and less “secure.” And the more security you seek, the more freedom you lose.
I remember hearing about a speaker at a college graduation who said, “when you leave here today you will see two doors. One is marked ‘security’ and the other one is marked ‘freedom.’ If you choose the door marked “security” you will lose both.” I wonder how many of the graduating seniors understood what he meant and of the ones who did, how many actually followed that advice?
Now I really don’t want to get into a big thing about how our education system sets most people up for failure. If you want to read my thoughts on that, please visit my post, “traditional education vs. self education.”
I’m getting too far off my original vision for this blog post as it is!
It use to be illegal to teach slaves how to read. Obviously they believed that an educated slave was dangerous. And of course that is true since knowledge is power. But I believe the same thing is happening to this day. Only today, our modern day slaves, wear white collars and drive BMW’s, (most likely bought with credit). They have to answer to a boss who tells them when they can take a vacation and how long they can go for. If they want to take their children to the dentist they have to ask permission to get time off to do that. They take pay cuts and even get downsized so that share holders can increase their revenues by one percent. They lose what they once believed to be secure pensions that they could retire on and many baby boomer now believe that they will have to work until the day they die. And they put up with all this in the name of security!
Is this completely ass backwards to anyone else? How long will people put up with this BS before they start to riot?
My life today looks very different than I once thought it would. I’m sure thats probably true for most people. I believed that I when I graduated from college I could easily get a nice secure job where I would wear a tie every day, kiss the bosses ass and earn an above average income. Luckily for me I soon noticed that this was not the case. I saw people very close to me lose jobs and retirement plans for companies they had given 25 years of their lives to.
Eventually I said that was not a life I wanted to live and I would never again be in that positon where I put my security and freedom into someone else’s hands.
And the way I see it now is that many people have fought hard and even given their lives so that I could live a life of freedom. The very least I could do is honor them by fighting for my own freedom and have the courage to take my destiny into my own hands. That makes much more sense to me than to gamble it on the whims of faceless big businesses and corporate greed.
